Play PS5 version "Collapse: Starrail" and PC version "Zenless Zone Zero" at HoYoverse booth

At the HoYoverse booth during the "gamescom 2023" gaming event in Cologne, Germany from August 23 to 27, 2023, several playable games were showcased, including "Genshin," "Collapse 3rd," "Collapse: Star Rail," and "Zenless Zone Zero."

Upon entering the venue, attendees were offered a campaign where they could participate by taking a photo and posting it with a designated hashtag. There was a vibrant presence of official cosplayers and numerous attendees who arrived in their own creative costumes.

The HoYoverse booth featured a dedicated media area where attendees could enjoy playing the PS5 version of "Collapse: Star Rail" and the PC version of "Zenless Zone Zero."

"Collapse: Star Rail" Exhibit

"Collapse: Star Rail" is a space-themed fantasy RPG that officially launched in Japan on April 23, available on PC and smartphones (with the PS5 version scheduled for Q4 2023).

As the latest addition to the "Collapse" series, players embark on a cosmic journey aboard a "star train," traversing space while solving the enigma of the "stellar nucleus," which triggers planet-scale catastrophes.

At the media demo station, I had the opportunity to engage in gameplay with a pre-set level 70 party consisting of Blade, Jeppard, Welt, and Rasetsu. While party member swapping might have been feasible, I chose not to risk disrupting the trial version's stability.

The PS5 version's controls were intuitive, with the left stick directing character movement and the right stick adjusting the camera view. Combat skills and attacks could be executed using the indicated button prompts on-screen, mirroring the mechanics of the PC version, making it akin to playing with a DualSense controller connected to a PC.

Switching from smartphone controls, which could be challenging for those less accustomed to them, to a controller noticeably alleviated the camera angle issues and enhanced the overall gaming experience. The larger screen showcased the spectacular battle sequences, and despite the 2K resolution due to display constraints, the PS5 version supports 4K output.

"Zenless Zone Zero" Showcase

"Zenless Zone Zero" is an action game set in a world on the brink of destruction by a perplexing phenomenon known as the "Hollow." This anomaly engulfs all within a spherical space, harboring creatures named "Aetherius." Anyone entering the Hollow risks transformation into an Aetherius.

Players adopt the role of a "proxy" tasked with guiding survivors away from the Hollow disaster, as they unravel the mysteries of the last city, "New Erie City."

The story mode snippet showcased at the event depicted a comic-style chase sequence featuring Amby Demara, Billy Kidd, and Nico Demara cornered atop a building, which seamlessly transitioned into the player's adventure with Amby Demara, lost within the Hollow.

Despite the post-apocalyptic backdrop, the story's buoyant development and comedic elements negate any sense of tragedy. The game's usage of terms such as Hollow, Aetherius, and Proxy within the dialogue adds an amusing touch.

Gameplay mechanics included normal attacks with left-click, dashing with right-click, skill activation using [Q] and [E] keys, and gamepad controls utilizing ABXY for normal attacks, dashing, and two assignable skills.

Combat offered a swift and stylish experience, even with the repetition of normal attacks. Billy Kidd's twin-pistol maneuvers stood out as particularly impressive, akin to a Chow Yun-Fat-esque display of controlled mayhem.

Operating as a three-character party, the game thrives on cooperation between characters. While battles are solo endeavors, cooperative skills can be activated when switching between characters.

Striking enemies a set number of times triggers a break state, allowing players to switch to one of the remaining characters by pressing the "R" key, promoting dynamic tactical choices.

This preview provided a glimpse of a portion of the game, leaving the broader picture still shrouded in mystery. Anticipating further insights, the game is expected to be exhibited at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show 2023 in September.
